The Meaning Behind the Ink: The Story

Find the Funny

I was always under the impression that I was too old or too out of shape for tattoos, but after my depression got really bad around 2022, I decided—what the hell. I had heard good things about The Silver Key, so I made the call. Josh was available. He made me feel comfortable and liked my idea. He’s now my go-to guy.

The tattoo is meaningful for multiple reasons, but mostly it reminds me that, as someone who struggles with depression, things can always be worse. And also, as a comedian for over 20 years now, Gary Larson’s The Far Side single-panel comics were pretty much my first introduction to humor. I especially loved the ones that didn’t require a caption—just like my tattoo.

It’s a guy already going through it, stranded on a desert island. Then a spaceship crashes in the ocean, and what appear to be not-too-friendly alien creatures are heading his way. The guy has that body language of, “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

It just always makes me smile and cheers me up. I hung this comic in my high school locker and also taped it to my mirror in my college dorm. Now I have it with me forever.
