The Meaning Behind the Ink: The Story

Because I Knew You, I am Changed For Good

My mom was truly one of my best friends. Together we shared a love for musicals, and enjoyed listening to the soundtracks, seeing shows live, and watching them on TV. One of our favorites was Wicked. We were both highly anticipating the release of the movie last year.

My mom fought a long and courageous battle with cancer, undergoing surgery on her face to remove a mass and her bottom jaw. I was her main caregiver and escort to doctors’ appointments and tests. Toward the end, when we knew that no more good news was to come, and after we were all cried out, I would turn on the Wicked soundtrack and drive us home.

We held hands and listened in silence, sharing our grief knowing that her life was going to end sooner than either of us would ever be ready for.

To mark the one-year anniversary of her death, I wanted a tattoo in her memory—and to always remember the moments that we shared enjoying Wicked. Not only from years past when she was healthy, but also during the hard days. I chose a quote from a song and the colors pink and green as a nod to Glinda and Elphaba.

I’ll always remember those precious times with my momma when I see my beautiful tattoo.
